Music Therapy with Memory, Elder & Hospice Care

Music therapy is a proven, effective tool in end of life care. When living with dementia or a related diagnosis, it is incredibly important to honor the strengths of the individual and assist in maintaining their independence for as long as possible. Because music therapy is a non-invasive approach, the individual maintains the highest level of autonomy possible for as long as possible.

Music therapy is highly adaptable and unique to the person making it accessible to all regardless of ability level or disease progression. Using the client’s preferred music, we curate structured music based activities designed to encourage, engage, and inspire the individual to express themselves and honor their authentic personhood through active music making. Because we’re making music together, the entire brain is activated, therefore, broadening engagement and fostering greater collaboration within the therapeutic setting. For this reason, music therapy is inherently more involved for the individual than simply listening to a playlist or a live music performance! Moreover, sessions can be conducted at bedside, in the home, within long term care facilities, day programs, or at senior centers to assist the individual living with dementia to practice and maintain the skills needed to conduct activities of daily living in the least restrictive environment.

Music therapy can be used in memory, elder, and hospice care settings to:

  • Improve quality of life

  • Alleviate pain
