Keep Your Spirits Up, We’re Almost There!
Happy March! ☘️✨🌈
Can you believe we’re already on blog number 3 for the year? How fast time flies…even when it feels like winter is taking its sweet old time to wrap up 🤭. Fear not! Daylight savings is around the corner, and before we know it, spring will be here!! Friday March 20, 2026 officially marks the first day of spring. So, how do we make it 3 more weeks? I thought we could talk about that for this month’s blog. I present to you my personal list of activities to inspire you through the last few weeks of winter. Keep your spirits up because we’re almost there, folks!
The first activity I want to bring to the table is a sweet one. There’s truly no better way to pass the time during the winter than to make yourself sweet treat after sweet treat after sweet treat. Filling your home with warmth and delicious smells before being rewarded with something yummy to snack on as the sun sets at 4 pm is my favorite way to beat the winter. Similarly, there’s a fun game I like to play with my memory care groups surrounding the song “If I Knew You We’re Coming I’d’ve Baked a Cake.” Check it out here! During this song, I like to go around to as many group members as I can to ask them what kind of cake I’d be making if they were coming over to my house. This is a fun little activity designed to stimulate memory, cue hunger, and support personal legacy. The group members are provided an opportunity to talk about their favorite type of cake (or dessert) and share memories surrounding that delicacy before I change up the lyrics to include the group member’s name and their favorite type of cake or dessert. They almost always respond by smiling and laughing!
Next up, settling in on the couch with a fuzzy blanket, a homemade latte, and a movie or tv show to watch. (I’m not a super big reader, but I suppose this is a great setup for that too!) This winter I’ve watched some of my favorite movies for comfort, like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Prince Caspian from The Chronicles of Narnia. And I’ve been enjoying watching shows from the early 2000s like Gilmore Girls, Roswell, and Smallville with my roommate as well. The set up is truly the key for this one. Our apartment is designed with relaxation in mind! Fluffy pillows, cozy rugs, colorful lighting and oh so many candles keep the energy spinning as the short days darken into the long nights.
Third on the list is moving my body. This looks different everyday, but I try not to fight it. Having a dance party by yourself can be so incredibly releasing and inspiring. And my favorite way to go about this is to just let it happen! If I’m feeling it, I’m feeling it and I move! Other times, this is much more forced and simplified. Stretching is the most accessible for me when I need to move but I don’t really feel like it. Especially because this one can be done while lying down! Picking a spot on the floor and working from my toes to above my head is my preferred method. I was a dancer from ages 3-11, so I find myself tapping into the stretching routines from those days. Not hurting my body, but pushing myself slightly and recognizing where I am holding tension, feeling the tension, and then releasing it is what comes naturally to me in these moments. I guess what I’m really saying here is to listen to and trust your body to direct you. And I will say, the hardest part of this is sitting still long enough to notice/feel it, but I believe in you. You are capable of incredible things. Don’t let the negative voice in your head convince you otherwise.
My fourth and final activity is loving those wonderful kitty cats I get to claim as my own. Finn and Maggie bring so much joy to my life and light to my long days. Waking up with them, caring for them, playing with them, and settling down to sleep with them each night gives back to my soul. The ability to fill your own cup is invaluable to your health and happiness in this life. If you have a furbaby at home to hug and hold, and cuddle with when it's cold, do it. I encourage you to put your phone down and fully immerse yourself in your furry friend’s world. Easier said than done, I know, but I promise your pets notice and they’ll reward you for your undivided attention to them. Go hug your pets, it’ll warm your heart!
I hope these ideas inspire you as the springtime approaches. The winter can be extremely tough on our emotional and mental state. Thanks for being here; we’re so lucky to have you!
